Literacy

The opening paragraph!

Newspaper articles tend to answer 4 questions straight away in their opening paragraph!  Can you tell me what those 4 questions are?

That’s right!

  • Who?

  • What?

  • When?

  • Where?

Let’s take a look at this happening in some examples…

Task 1:  Can you highlight, or record in your book, the who, what, when, where for each of the articles Miss Housley gave us yesterday?  Here are the opening paragraphs…

Task 2:  Can you do this for other newspaper articles you find over the rest of the week?  If you have a newspaper at home right now, you could do it straight away!

Task 3:  Take a look at my example of an opening paragraph for a newspaper below.  Can you write your own opening paragraph for your newspaper about a tsunami disaster?  Think about,

  • What story will the article tell?  One of devastation, one of survival, one of heroism???
  • where the disaster could have happened
  • when it struck, what exactly is the article

Topic

Task 1 – adding to the World map.

Over the course of our Topic, you guys have been adding to your World maps to show different climate zones, location of tectonic plates and volcanoes. This week, we are focusing on tsunamis and you are going to add these to your World map.

Yesterday, you had a look at what a tsunami is and how they are caused. You showcased your learning by writing a recipe for a tsunami and summarasing using the summarise VIPER.

Today, we would like you to add the locations of tsunamis to your World map. There are some famous tsunamis listed below,

  • Sumatra, Indonesia – 26 December 2004.
  • North Pacific Coast, Japan – 11 March 2011.
  • Lisbon, Portugal – 1 November 1755 (a very long time ago!)
  • Krakatau, Indonesia – 27 August 1883
  • Enshunada Sea, Japan – 20 September 1498 (a very, very long time ago!!!)

I have attached a map of the biggest and the worst tsunamis. You may magpie these and add them to your map. I particularly like the captions around the edge of the map that give extra detail of the tsunamis for the reader.

Task 2 – Tsunami information poster.

Task 2 is an extension to task 1 – do not worry if you don’t get onto this task, it is extra work for you.

I would like you to design a poster of a chosen tsunami. The poster must be an informative poster (something that gives lots of information!)

Chose a tsunami that you have added to your map and go into more detail about it on your poster! Here are some ideas to think about it.

  • Name and location of the tsunami
  • Picture of the tsunami
  • What caused the tsunami?
  • What was the effect of the tsunami? (houses destroyed, people killed?)
  • How big was the tsunami?

Let us know how you get on with your tasks, Year 3 and Year 4. We look forward to seeing your outcomes!
