Matching activity.  Can you use your internet search skills (or family general knowledge) to match the car make to it’s home country?

SPAG

We have learned about expanded noun phrases already in class.  Let’s recap the main bits first as they will be really useful un this week’s literacy tasks!

Expanded Noun Phrases An expanded noun phrase tells us more about a noun. Most of you will use expanded noun phrases without realising.  press the fast forward button on the slide below to read the 6 pages as a reminder

We create an expanded noun phrase when we add adjectives after the determiner and before the noun.

Determiner        Adjectives               Noun

The               silly, old            teacher

A                   lovely, tasty      icecream

That             giddy, young     puppy

We would like you to come up with 10 expanded noun phrases of your own.  Remember, write neatly using your best handwriting and a line guide.  Include a title and the date at the top of the page.  Start a new line for each expanded noun phrase you invent.

Literacy

Our new topic is named By land, air and sea.  We are going to look at vehicles which use the land first.  This week we are going to focus on the automobile.  Our literacy tasks are going to teach us how to write persuasively (that means getting people to agree with what you are writing!)  Infact, we are going to start right now…you are going to persuade your grown-ups to buy a car from us!

This car…

Isn’t she a beauty?  Well, ok, I admit she needs a little work!  But that’s for your parents to worry about once they have bought it from us!

Now, we need to choose the right vocabulary to sell our car.  If we advertise it as a rusty, old banger then noone will want to buy it!

Hold on, I just used an expanded noun phrase!

Determiner        Adjectives               Noun

A                   rusty, old          banger

Now you know what they are, you will be spotting them EVERYWHERE!!!   Let’s see how I could reword this a little better…

Our car benefits from the rare, original windscreen, which is intact and just requiring a quick clean.

That’s better!  OK.  for today’s task, I’m going to give you a few more expanded noun phrases that describe our car and you are going to get (very) creative and change them to a more suitable description (your version does not have to be an expanded noun phrase but they will probably keep cropping up!) REMEMBER, you have to still describe the same feature but do so in a nicer way.  Don’t worry, I’ve included a couple of examples on your sheet.  There is also a vocabulary sheet to help you, below.

Reading.  Today is all about the vocabulary used in persuasive writing.  This afternoon, we are going to investigate how car adverts use persuasive language and then we are going to find out about what some of the jargon in car adverts actually means!
