Today, we are going to continue our work on money away from the White Rose maths scheme. We are going to look at opportunities to apply the addition of money and work out change, like we would do in real-life. However, we are going to use our place value skills to help us work out the answers!
I would like you to set out your additions and subtractions (for when working out change) like we would with our place value charts when we do column addition and subtraction. We have done this lots in class. Remember, keep the columns straight and make sure the tens line up with the tens and the units line up with the units.

See if you can use place value to work out these real-life style challenges, the SNACK ATTACK challenge practises what we have already covered and the PIZZA challenge is more difficult as it mixes using pounds and pence! Choose which one is right for you.
Find the cost of:
- One small mushroom pizza with extra cheese and tomato topping.
- Two large cheese pizzas and one small chicken pizza.
- A small ham pizza with extra cheese and a large tuna pizza with extra tomato.
- A large salami pizza with extra cheese and two small cheese pizzas, one with extra tomato.
Sue and Ravi want to buy one large pizza with extra cheese and one small pizza with extra tomato. They have £10 between them. Which pizzas can they buy?
SPaG – Formal and Informal language
Today, we are going to be looking at formal and informal language.
Formal language is what we use when we address someone we don’t know or someone we show respect to.
Informal language is what we use when speaking to a friend or someone in our family and we are more relaxed when speaking to them.

Our final natural disaster we will be learning about this week is:
Wildfires!
To introduce this new learning, we are going to read a non fiction text and use our retrieval Vipers skill to find some more information about wildfires.

Wildfires are spreading!
This is the final natural disaster that we are going to be looking at. So far in the topic you have added different climate zones, location of tectonic plates, volcanoes and tsunamis. This week, we are focusing on wildfires and you are going to add these to your World map.
We would like you to add the locations of wildfires to your World map. There are some famous wildfires listed below,
- Amazon Forest Fire – 2019
- Bandipur forest fires – 2019
- Camp Fire – 2018
- Uttarakhand Forest Fire – 2016
- The Black Saturday Bushfires – 2009
I have attached a map of the biggest and the worst wildfires. You may magpie these and add them to your map. I particularly like the captions around the edge of the map that give extra detail of the wildfires for the reader.

Task 2 – Wildfire information poster.
Task 2 is an extension to task 1 – do not worry if you don’t get onto this task, it is extra work for you.
I would like you to design a poster of a chosen Wildfire. The poster must be an informative poster (something that gives lots of information!) There is an informative poster attached for you that you may wish to use to help you with your poster.
Chose a wildfire that you have added to your map and go into more detail about it on your poster! Here are some ideas to think about it.
- Name and location of the wildfire
- Picture of the wildfire
- What caused the wildfire
- What was the effect of the wildfire?
- How big was the wildfire?
