What a great day we’ve had! How cool do we look?! 🤘🎸
Don’t forget to practise those times tables!
Good morning!
We have a very busy week planned this week. We are going to start our new topic of Mythical creatures! We are ao excited to start learning about where they originated from and what stories they are included in. We are going to look at where dragons, unicorns, and the Lock Ness monster come from and what they are. This will include making a wanted poster for the Loch Ness Monster and a fact file all about dragons!
This week’s spellings are focussed around the prefix ‘dis’ having a negative effect on the root word :
discover disappear dishonest disallow disbelieve disapprove |
In our maths learning, we will be looking at the 8 times table and diving by 8. You can practice your time’s tables and 8 times tables/divides by going on tt rockstars!
Have a great week,
Miss Housley 🙂
Wow, what a lovely first week back! I have really enjoyed getting back into the swing of things and what a great class you are! Thank you for making this week so lovely!
We have started our final unit on our locality topic and we’re now looking at what it is like in France (our nearest European neighbour) and have been finding out some interesting facts.
We have been working so hard using coordinating conjunctions to join sentences together in Literacy and spotting patterns in addition and subtraction calculations in maths. We’ve even managed to do some science on rock features and learned all about Diwali – what a busy week!
Today we have had a fantastic morning in our harvest assembly! We enjoyed singing the songs and learning about why we give food to people who need it the most.
Take a look at some of the photos of our amazing display and the videos of us singing in the hall!
Today we have used our practical equipment and the place value counters to help us with our maths work!
We worked together in pairs and as part of our table groups to work out the subtractions crossing the ten.
Take a look at our hard work!
This week we are going to compare all of our knowledge on victorian mining to modern miners and how safety equipment has improved over the years. We will also be creating a beautiful piece of charcoal artwork of a mining scene in our topic learning time.
In our maths this week, we are learning how to cross the 100 in place value when adding and subtracting numbers. Wea re using base 10 to help us with our calculations this week too!
This weeks spellings are:
1)kindly
2)quickly
3)safely
4)rudely
5)strongly
6)sweetly
This week we are starting a new unit in our topic work and we are focussing our learning on coal mining! As this is a large part of Yorkshire’s history, we are excited to learn more about the history and role this had in social changes in the area. We are going to create timelines of local history, write a diary from the viewpoint of a miner and write a job advert for a job in the mine!
In maths, we are subtracting 3 digit numbers with 1 digit numbers and using a number line to help us subtract larger numbers.
Our spellings this week are:
Spellings: |
1) fair
2) fare |
3) brake
4) break
5) meet
6) meat
Part of our topic work this week has been looking at what Yorkshire is famous for and the people, places and foods from Yorkshire. One of the most famous things from Yorkshire has to be the Yorkshire pudding!
We made the Yorkshire puddings in our table groups and looked at the recipe to follow whilst we made them. This also linked into our literacy work this week of writing instructions so we made sure we wrote the instructions up carefully to follow when making the Yorkshire puddings.
Take a look at us making our delicious Yorkshire puddings!
Home Learning 8/10/21
Remember Home learning is set on a Friday and should be returned the following Friday if you want it marking. If there is something you don’t get chance to do or forget to do, don’t worry. Keep the book and just collect a home learning slip from the class or check the blog as the home learning is always up on the blog on the day it is handed out.
This week we have been looking at what it means to be from Yorkshire and we even made some yummy Yorkshire puddings. We have also started a new unit of adding 3 digit numbers in maths.
For this week’s home learning, I would like you to use your literacy skills we have learnt this week and design your own recipe for Yorkshire puddings. Don’t forget to include commands, sub headings, bullet points, what you need and ingredients list and the method.
This could be a crazy flavour or the classic flavour we made in class! You can make up the ingredients or look up the exact measurements. Make sure you add lots of colour to your recipe and drawings/pictures of Yorkshire puddings!
There are also new maths challenges on Mangahigh that I have set linked to our maths learning, if you want another home learning challenge!
Have a lovely weekend 😊

We have had another busy week of our topic work this week, focussing on computer skills and map work based on Yorkshire, Barnsley and Birdwell.
For this week’s home learning, I would like you to use the persuasive language skills we have learnt in literacy to design your own advert about Barnsley, Yorkshire or Birdwell. You can use the facts you already have about Yorkshire or find some amazing facts about Birdwell or Barnsley and use these in your advert! Remember to make it stand out and try to include questions to make the reader agree with you!
For Example: Can you see why you need to go to brilliant Barnsley?
Don’t you think Yorkshire is amazing?
Do you want to see God’s own county?
There are also new maths challenges on Mangahigh that I have set linked to our maths learning, if you want another home learning challenge!

Miss Housley
We have completed our artwork based on Pete Mckee portraits! We have loved working on computers to create digital images based on drawings.
We used paint software on the computer to edit the images on the laptops.
We began creating the digital images by drawing a self-portrait in the style of Pete Mckee. Then we scanned the image to the computer and saved the image as a monochrome JPEG. Then we added in colour using the paint fill tool and saved this.
Take a look at some of the amazing examples!
This week in year 3 we have a lot of learning planned for our topic work of Yorkshire!
We are starting to locate Yorkshire on maps and locate Birdwell and Barnsley too! We will also be completing our amazing Pete Mckee artwork using the computer skills we have been developing in class.

This week’s home learning is related to our topic focus this week of the Sheffield based artist Pete McKee. We have been drawing in the style of Pete Mckee and learning about him as an artist.
I would like you to draw the people you live with in the style of Pete McKee. This could be drawing one person or a few people. His style is based on comics so don’t forget to include simple colours in your work.
I have also given you a spelling list for Year 3 for you to practice up to 5 spellings of your choice. You could write these in bubble writing to practice, writing in felt tips or show off some sentences include g the words. This is great practice for you to see and learn the spellings of year 3. (You won’t have a test on the ones you pick, this is just for you to practice some spellings at home).
Have a lovely weekend 😊
Miss Housley
This week we have been looking into number lines in our maths work. We have looked into number lines to 100 and 1000!
We also learned about contractions and how important the apostrophe is in a contraction, for example, it is = it’s.
In our topic this week, we have looked at Pete Mckee, the local artist and we have started to learn about his works that can be seen around Sheffield! We will even be drawing our own portrait in the Pete Mckee style.
Miss Housley 🙂
Spellings this week are:
1) claim 2) praise 3) straight 4) contain 5) brain 6) faint |
Home Learning 17/9/21
Wow! What a fantastic start to year 3 we have had. We have jam packed lots of learning into our days and have been very busy. Our home learning this week is based on our new topic ‘Where am I from?’.
Can you find out as many facts about Yorkshire as you can? This includes asking the people you live with about what they know too. Can you write these as sentences in your home learning books? Can you try to include some of your literacy knowledge on expanded noun phrases into your sentences too! (Remember the adjective is before the noun!)
Eg. Yorkshire is famous for yummy Yorkshire puddings.
You can set this home learning out however you like in your books. This can be sentences, a poster on Yorkshire or some bullet point facts with some drawings/pictures!
Home learning is always due in the following Friday. Have a lovely weekend 😊
Miss Housley
We have had a great start to year 3 and we are so busy with our amazing learning!

Our spellings this week are:
1)they
2)grey
3)disobey

The spelling list for the week commencing 6.9.21:
1) eight
2) eighty 3) eighth 4) neighbour 5) sleigh 6) weight |
Miss Housley 🙂
We designed our own comic book panels to depict a gladiatorial fight in the colluseum. After looking at examples of comic books, we realised that the panels rarely just showed the protagonists as viewed from the side. The best panels did clever things like zoom in on the action and only show the most important elements in each scene.
We copied this idea by taking photographs of our friends at each stage of the ‘fight’ or finding photos online that matched what we wanted. Just like the comic books Mr Swallow showed us, we focussed upon what mattered in the scene and used framing or zooming to make the action seem real.
The final stage was to trace the photos we had arranged into a comic book style, adapting the clothing and props to give it the Ancient Roman look…see what you think.
Marvel Studios had better watch out!
…right here in our classroom!
First, we had to use the numerator to help us identify how many fractions to colour-in, in all of these different shapes!
If we could do that, we had to use both the numerator and denominator to help us colour in the correct fraction!
Then the real challenge began. Mr Swallow gave each team 2 hoops. First, he told us that UNIT FRACTIONS had to go in the green hoop whilst NON-UNIT FRACTIONS had to go in the blue hoop. Our team had to discuss and sort all of the fraction cards we had made into the correct hoop!
Finally, Mr Swallow changed the criteria for the 2 hoops…we had to put fractions that made a half into the green hoop and those that did not make a half into the blue hoop!
Some of us were challenged further, to use the hoops to sort fractions that were less than a half, from those that were worth more than a half!!! That meant that we had to use our reasoning skills to decide what to do with those fractions that were worth EXACTLY a half!!!
We have been finely honing our design technology skills this year so Mr Swallow set us a 3 lesson challenge! We only had 3 hrs to work in teams to construct a replica of a famous Roman landmark…take a look at how we are getting on…
We were trained how to safely cut with a craft knife and how to safely use a glue gun with Mr Swallow’s supervision.
We investigated which number could be divided into halves, thirds or quarters.
As we sorted the numbers, we looked for patterns and jotted down possible rules…it turned out that our Times Tables are as useful as ever!!!
Welcome to our new Summer term topic;
A and E us created a cottage boat called scull
A couple of our guitar students decided to play an impromptu concert for their classmates on the playground at playtime!
If it’s good enough for Ed Sheeran!!!
We have begun by looking at how we read the volume of a liquid by using a variety of measuring cylinders.
We found that real-life measuring requires a few specific skills:
I ended up with 4 train lines on my map…that would be really handy for dropping me quickly at all of my favourite places. We noticed in class, that some of my stations are on several lines, for example: The Holidays station is on my hobby line, because being on holiday is one of my favourite things to do! It’s also on the family line as I always go away with my family. Finally, it’s on my healthy line as we tend to have really busy holidays and go swimming, cycling or sometimes even snowboarding.
It looks like Faith has plenty of things she is looking forward to…
Our challenge was to sell our, ‘unique’ car through the use of our persuasive powers. Yesterday, we looked at how choosing the right vocabulary when describing an object can be very helpful in persuading people they would like it too! Check out these amazing car adverts sent in…
Faith and Frankie
Very good girls, I agree that ‘the engine may need some attention’ Faith and the maybe ‘a lick of paint and some TLC’ would help too, Frankie! Brilliant!
A look at transport, how it works and how it has changed over time.
Wow! One of our households was certainly put through a thorough inspection this week!
Birdwell’s chief fire marshall dopped by with a very comprehensive checklist to see if the property was up to code! Unfortunately, lots of things needed fixing! The inspector was even frustrated enough to have to record, “Tut, tut!” on her checklist! Thank goodness she had several sensible and formally worded recommendations to make the house safe. Well done chief fire marshall, Birdwell is in safe hands!
Meanwhile, in school, the chief’s deputies gave the school a thorough test. Mr. bailey looked extremely fraught as the inspectors examined the school! They did not miss a trick and even ran an impromptu fire drill to see if the children of Birdwell knew what to do in a fire emergency! The inspectors were certainly not shy at pointing out the faults as well as the things that school got right/
The inspectors were pleased to see that all locations in the school had up to date fire plans and fire safety equipment and that fire doors were clear and in excellent working order. However, they were not impressed that the staffroom had improperly vented microwaves and the wheely bins require chaining into place! I imagine they will give Mr. Bailey and Neil the caretaker a stern talking to on Monday morning!
Mr K completed a successful site visit in Barnsley
He thoroughly enjoyed recommending the changes he wanted to see and was really good at using the correct formal language in his letter!
Even despite the sound not being too good on my video tutorial, we still had some fab portraits sent in. One of our pupils really thought on his feet and used a youtube tutorial to follow when the sound on our lesson wouldn’t work for him! Great improvisation Mr. G!
We were learning a few techniques that would make the subject (person) in our portrait look sad or shocked…see what you think.#
Here are the introductory paragraphs from the children in school.. Listen carefully, can you hear the formal language choices they have made. Does the introduction convince you that the letter is from an important fire official?
Some Year 4 pupils also contributed a paragraph, being a year older, they included some advanced vocabulary and ideas. Feel free to magpie bits that you like and use them in your own way…
Wow!
Remember, tomorrow you will help me write my introduction so you will have to teach me the correct formal language to use!
Here is Faith’s fantastic newspaper article. Lets see what criteria from the learning across the week she has decided to include:
What can Faith tick off from the list?
Our final lesson, tomorrow, will be about proofreading to check for mistakes and improvements and also, checking all of the different sections work well together.
Here is Riley’s article that he has created on Word! Have a read and see what[embeddoc url=”https://birdwellyear3.edublogs.org/files/2021/01/Riley-newspaper.pdf” width=”50%” height=”250px” download=”all” viewer=”google” ] features Riley can check off the list…
Olivia sent in her fab newspaper, she got the format just right, it really looks like a newspaper…I like the EXTRA NEWS feature Olivia! 🤣
Lewis sent us his tsunami article set in Japan! He even found space to give us a weather forecast…
Leo pulled out all of the stops with his newspaper! He ended up producing 4 pages! That’s almost a newspaper instead of just an article! Well done Leo, take a look, everyone…
As well as an amazingly cheesy grin, L added in a fantastic opening paragraph and even used a quote before I asked him to! #Newspapergenius
Riley R went the extra mile with his newspaper! He even printed things out to stick in! Very well done Mr. R!
Today, we were lucky to host a visit from some eminent names in the field of geology. Professor Know-It-All, of Oxford University and her colleague, Dr. Kleva-Cloggs, from the Swedish Institute of Advanced Geological study, dropped by Birdwell Primary School to explain to us the stages of how tsunamis work…
We were then joined, live via satellite by the famous Dr. Von-tsunami-stien
I’ve loved seeing what you are up to, send it in and I’ll keep adding it here for us to see as soon as I can..,.
Wow! Mr. Leo Gosling sent me what he has done so far on his newspaper layout and first paragraph and it comes as no surprise that he is proud of the result! What pride he’s taken in his presentation and what a lot of features he’s included! I can see:
Frankie has based her article on a real life hero…HER UNCLE!!! How fab is that? I can’t wait to see how this article comes along, you’ve clearly taken a LOT of pride in this so far Frankie!
Send me your newspapers, let’s see how they’re looking so far…
These look as if they are going to cause a ‘disaster’ in lots of homes!!!
Here are our contributions from in class:
Lyla did an amazing whale
.
Anna’s penguin is fab!
A. Chose a cool penguin too
.
Isla labelled her lovely killer whale.
Frankie sent her fab animals from home.
Chloe sent her animals in too! The owl is fantastic!
Olivia chose a giraffe for her amazing animal.
Check out Libby’s amazing drawings
F. sent in these pages, it looks as if she is very proud of them!!!
We have put together a pack for all the children with a book, writing pencil, line guide, white board & pen as well as a few sheets that will be useful later in the topic. They can either be collected from school, at our entrance steps or I can deliver them to you if you are struggling to get here.
We are going to treat these books just like our topic books in class! That means that every piece of work we do is our very best presentation and handwriting! We only write in writing pencil (NOT FELT TIP!!!) and we underline our titles in red, neatly with a ruler. I want these books to be the record of our online topic and I want them to be good enough to compare to our normal topic books in class! So take a lot of care and pride in your lock down learning, just like you do for me in class!
|It’s party day and we all look GORGEOUS in our party outfits. Like all good Christmas parties, we headed to the photo booth to dress up…
Now, we only need Leo to photocopy his bottom and we’re ready for Christmas!
We have made some beautiful Christmas stockings for our classroom, BUT don’t worry, we’ll be bringing them home to jazz up our Christmas trees!
For those of you who have very tasteful, colour-coordinated trees, (Frankie’s mum) Don’t fret! We have used so many colours in our stockings that there must be one in there that goes with your tree! Make sure you kids all post me a picture of your stocking when you’ve hung it up!
We have been discussing the style of poetry that Dr. Seuss uses a lot in class. We have decided that we can see 3 tricks that he regularly uses…
Today is Christmas Jumper Day and there’s not a Grinch in sight! (Mr. Bailey must be in his office!) You all look fantastic.
I don’t want to miss out on all of the fun so I’ll see you guys this morning over Zoom
Meeting ID: 928 9501 9935
Passcode: xmas
We’ve been discussing why the Grinch hates Christmas so much and why he is so miserable. We decided that he probably hates all of the things to do with Christmas because he feels left out…he has never experienced giving or receiving presents, Christmas dinner, Christmas carol singing or even spending time with loved ones.
We thought it may be a good idea to give the Grinch a few ideas on how to enjoy Christmas and Whoville a little bit more…
We have looked at some of the symbolic ways that parts of Christmas are represented, just like some of the pictures we find inside an advent calendar. The children did their own advent calendar-style lift-the-flap explanations of what the symbols represent…
Christmas is a Christian holiday so we have been finding out more about the symbols that represent Christmas (like the wreathes we see in advent calendars, the presents we give and the candles we light) and the places that Christians go to worship.
Today we looked at what features we would expect to see inside a church:
We used our internet research skills to find out about the life and work of Dr. Seuss. We used these to create our own biographies.
We used:
We didn’t draft our work this time, we used our notes and the criteria on the board to help us structure our work and just went for it! Of course, that meant that when we had finished, we had to proof read our work to look for mistakes or improvements.
The last thing we want, after all of our hard work, is for us to unwrap our gift and it turn out to be something the reader doesn’t like!
What we can do is leave the story just as we see what the gift is…and the reader will NEVER KNOW what it was! This is called a cliff-hanger!
Task: Describe an imaginary, wrapped-up parcel in detail. The shape, the weight, the wrapping paper. You can peel away the wrapper and give tiny details (that could be anything) but we won’t say what is inside…EVER!
I woke up on Christmas morning. I opened my presents. I got the best present ever.
Let’s look at ways of making them wait…
Let’s give it a try. Give me a detailed account of your journey from your bedroom to your living room. What do you pass? Do the carpets or floors feel different in each room? Does it suddenly get brighter or darker room to room? What are your decorations like?
We could use some of the details in our final piece on Friday!
We have been using texture in our drawings to make that mean old grinch look his fluffiest and softest!
It was really important to move our pencils, paints, pens and pastels in the right direction for every stroke. We even added the background paint in the opposite direction so even the edges are fluffy!
Miss Housley has planned her first topic as a trainee teacher and it looks like we are going to be having LOTS of fun…

We can use the computer to put our favourite topic photos together!
We have learned a long list of skills to be able to do this:
Our topic, ‘Indiana Jones and the Pharaoh’s Curse’, has finally come to an end and it has been fantastic. We have had great fun and learned a lot. Mr. Crouch and I are very, very proud of all the children. They have worked incredibly hard and made this topic a pleasure to teach.
Take a look at this letter to find out about our end of topic challenge day and then scroll down the blog to see how we did…
[embeddoc url=”https://birdwellyear3.edublogs.org/files/2020/11/End-of-topic-challenge.pdf” download=”all” viewer=”google” ]
For thousands of years, it has remained locked tight and hidden away from the world. Will our children be able to complete every challenge in order to break the curse and allow the chest to be opened?
The treasure chest took some opening! Once we had managed to complete all of the challenges Mr Mathieson (just) managed to lift the chest onto a table between the 2 classes…we then had to say the magic words and the chest opened!
Out poured (biscuit) Gold Bars, (jelly) worms and spiders and dozens of (chocolate) gold coins!!! A treasure fit for a Pharaoh! Well done Year 3, you managed to finally lift the Pharaoh’s curse…I wonder what our next topic will be?
First, the children must navigate a daring assault course, using the PE skills Mr. Crouch has taught them all term, to balance, travel at height and control their movement. Then, just like Indy, the children must take a daring leap of faith. Each child will choose the dismount from the apparatus that is a challenge for them! Do they have the courage they need to make it to the Pharaoh’s tomb??
This is where our intrepid archeologist hone the physical fitness and lightning reactions! Training to dodge poison arrows, jump pits of death, push endurance to the limit and remember to grab their hat when it falls off!
Can our teams use their knowledge of the Nile valley and their understanding of the water cycle to become museum curators and explain how it all works to you at home?
A cryptic video message…ancient and mysterious relics…a tricky puzzle to solve…it looks like we are going to need all of our knowledge about Ancient Egypt to succeed!
The Pharaoh’s ancient stone tablets are littered around the school field.
The children will use all of their finely honed archeology skills to locate the tablets and decipher the hieroglyphs to crack the code. Once they decode every word and reassemble them in the right order, they will be able to solve the ancient riddle left by the Pharaoh centuries ago…
Well done everyone…I think most groups got most of the words (no thanks to the wind and rain doing their best to make all of the clues disappear!!!) The answer is…
Boom boom!
Well, I hope so as my classroom certainly wasn’t after whole-class bread making! We had lots of fun and the bread looked surprisingly delicious:
We used traditional ingredients such as pistachio nuts and honey but we left out the sand! (Ask your children why they used to use sand in their bread making and what problem it caused!) As always in my class, the children did all of the recipe reading, measuring ingredients and baking themselves…if they got the recipe wrong it got made wrong! But luckily, we all seemed to enjoy our creations…

We found out that the Ancient Egyptians worshipped certain animals. They treated some of them better than people! The animals were seen as special because they either belonged to a certain God or even that the God lived through them!
We found out that they even mummified some creatures so that they could be buried with their owners, to keep them company in the afterlife!
We took lots of pride in the work in our topic books, take a look at these faces of concentration…
We have been very busy this morning making our own (extremely authentic-looking) Egyptian neck-piece. The children GOT THEIR OWN EQUIPMENT from our shelves, then COVERED THE TABLE THEMSELVES and finally, GOT THEIR OWN PAINTS AND CRAFT MATERIALS!
That’s how grown up we are in Year 3!
However, that is not the most impressive aspect of our lesson! We also tidied up ourselves! I didn’t help AT ALL! The kids put all of the resources away and tidied up the rubbish themselves. Take a look at our classroom after a full lesson of painting, sticking and glitter…
So, when they make one of these for their homework, they’ll be able to do the same at home!
Well done kids, I’m very proud of you all!
…Don’t worry, we won’t blame you if you can’t tell just yet!
Year 3 are busy crafting something strange out of wood, card, tape and plaster! Can any of our grown ups guess what it is and leave their guess as a comment on here? (No cheating and asking your kids!)
We have been learning about the Ancient Egyptian writing system. known as hieroglyphics. We wrote our names in hieroglyphs and then carved it onto a stone tablet (well, actually it was a bit of wallpaper that we made look like a tablet but don’t tell anyone!)
We were so good at it that we decided to write a secret message in hieroglyphs!
Then, we became real-life archeologists and chose another person’s book so we could try and crack their coded message!
We came across all of the problems that archeologists face in real life…spelling mistakes, symbols that could be interpretted as more than one letter and words that didn’t seem to make sense! however, we persevered and did really well decoding the messages. It was lots of fun!
We know that the Ancient Egyptians lived a long time ago…but we were surprised to discover just HOW LONG AGO! We also discovered that they were around for A VERY LONG TIME!
We even discovered that the end of the Egyptian empire and the rule of Queen Cleopatra was actually closer to TODAY than it was to the building of the pyramids!!! WOW!
Take a look at our timelines to see what happened, when.
We have been using Google Earth, maps and atlases in class as well as some old-fashioned maps of Egypt to look at what the country is like and where it is in the world. We have:
when we get home, ask us to find Egypt on a map. Also, ask us why all of the towns and cities in Ancient Egypt happened to be right next to the river Nile!
As you can all imagine, we have had to make a few changes around school to suit the current restrictions but hopefully our room still looks inviting…
Welcome back to school everyone!
As we have quite unusual circumstances in which to host today’s quiz, we are going to have a little challenge! As none of the other teachers have seen the quiz, I thought that they should all join in…so you lot can beat them!
Some of the staff are going to join in from home.
What we want you guys to do is get a higher score than your teacher!
Remember, you need a device to view the quiz on (with Zoom downloaded and signed into) and a DIFFERENT device to put the answers onto (with kahoot! downloaded onto).
The quiz will begin at 1:30 but I will open up the Zoom link afterwards so we can see the friends in our class for a chat.
The Zoom Meeting ID is:

Well done to our 1st place winner of the yearly Christmas Card Competition. Our local MP Stephanie Peacock came to present the award. Congratulations.
