Our model volcanoes!

These look as if they are going to cause a ‘disaster’ in lots of homes!!!

Here are our contributions from in class:

Adding volcanoes to our world map

In the first week of lockdown, we created world maps that showed the different climate zones of the world.  In earthquake week, we added the location of all the tectonic plates to it.  This week, volcano week, we have added the location of 5 infamous eruptions!

Here is Lewis W’s…he did a great job of making the volcanoes stand out from the map.  Well done Lewis!

Lots of other children sent in volcano work too…

Delightful diaries

Lots of pupils sent in their diary entries.  When you read them, check to see:

  • If they used any of the features of a diary that you identified
  • shared their inner thoughts and feelings
  • gave clues and description instead of just telling us there was an earthquake

Earthquake proof building challenge

Jorja took several attempts to reach this masterpiece!  She kept finding ways to strengthen and reinforce the structure.  Well done Jorja!  This is ace.

Check out this lovely design.  That’s a pretty tall tower to say you used such slender materials and I understand that it passed all the tests…including you dancing around it like a lunatic!  Well done!

Riley made this tough-looking castle to withstand an earthquake

Lewis used marshmallows to join his structure together. It looks fab AND passed all 3 tests.  Well done!

Chloe was VERY frustrated building this masterpiece, BUT she didn’t give up!  Great resilience Chloe.  I love your choice of materials!  I would say that earthquake you simulated would have topped the Richter scale too!!!

(Video to follow)

This is a very solid looking structure from blocks.  Check back soon becasue there are 2 great TEST videos that go with it!

This one made me laught a lot!  The message that came with it says, “we tried, we failed, we had a lot of fun!”  The pictures say it all really!  Fantastic effort guys!

 😁👍Brilliant!!!

Earthquake Posters

Don’t worry if you didn’t get your poster done in 1 afternoon, you can keep going back to it.  I’d rather you take time with work and do your best than rush!

Here are some, work in progress to inspire you…

check out this super-sized mega poster! What a cool title and a lot of hard work!

Check out this hi-tech contribution!  This pupil used photo shop to build up their title in layers to create this amazing effect!

And here is the finished article!

Frankie drew a cross-section of the Earth to show us what is going on beneath our feet!

Faith went for a very dramatic view of the Earth vibrating from all of the quakes!  I like where you’ve put that scientists will ‘hopefully’ be able to predict them in future Faith!

Libby made her poster on word and filled it full of the facts she had learned during the afternoon!  Well done Libby.

Morning Register

I have just finished setting up a Microsoft Teams account for all of us to share.  Parents should receive an email message from me to the email address they have registered in school, this just confirms that you have been added to the Year 3 team.

LOTS OF PARENTS DID NOT GET THIS MESSAGE, IF YOU EMAIL ME THEN i WILL SEND YOU THE LINK DIRECTLY.

If you down load Teams to your device and then sign in, you will see our Tear 3 team. That means that each morning, you don’t need a meeting code or link or anything like that, you just open your Teams app at 9:00 and wait for the meeting to go live.  The meeting is called ‘register Year 3’ and it will be the same every morning.

I will post the work for the day to our blog (look at the little menu bar just above this post and you’ll see “Online Learning”,

If you ‘hover’ over the Online Learning writing, a menu will drop down with the work for each day of the week

Just after register, I will run through the tasks for the day and show you what I want you to do.  It will be up to you what order you complete the tasks in as I know your parents and carers will be busy in the house.  I will try and make sure there is always something you can have a go at without any help at all.

If you get stuck, then Mr Crouch and I will be able to help you out.  It will take a bit of getting used to at first but I know we will make it work together.

The meeting will stay open until I’m sure that everyone knows what to do and any children who require 1:1 support can stay online in the session. Children can leave and begin work when they are ready to.  Once the session is closed, I will stay available on teams and you can video call me for more support.

IF YOU DIDN’T RECEIVE AN EMAIL INVITATION

OR

IF YOU WISH TO REGISTER WITH A DIFFERENT EMAIL

Please email me at r.swallow@birdwellprimary.org.uk and I’ll try to sort it.

Resources for lockdown

We have put together a pack for all the children with a book, writing pencil, line guide, white board & pen as well as a few sheets that will be useful later in the topic.  They can either be collected from school, at our entrance steps or I can deliver them to you if you are struggling to get here.

We are going to treat these books just like our topic books in class!  That means that every piece of work we do is our very best presentation and handwriting!  We only write in writing pencil (NOT FELT TIP!!!) and we underline our titles in red, neatly with a ruler.  I want these books to be the record of our online topic and I want them to be good enough to compare to our normal topic books in class!  So take a lot of care and pride in your lock down learning, just like you do for me in class!

Lockdown Learning

Here we go again kids!  Well, don’t worry!  We have got a FANTASTIC online topic planned and Mr Mathieson, Miss Housley, Mr Crouch and myself are really looking forward to working on it with you!

It’s called:

“DISASTER ZONE!  Surviving Planet Earth!”

Each day, we will add the lessons for the day to the ‘Online Learning’ tab on this blog.  Each morning will start with a 9:00 am onwards Teams sessions where we will take a register and explain the tasks for the day.  Your teachers will be adding work here on the blog, over video and on Microsoft Teams, to keep you all busy at home.  Log onto the register every day to show us you are ready to learn and we will talk you through the activities.

See you all online, Mr Swallow
